“Our meetings are not just about talking”, I tried to emphasize this point to a colleague recently. I had commandeered the games room once more for our monthly meeting – an hour of mostly men waiting impatiently for us to finish ‘talking’.
Women In Tech (W.I.T.) groups are not just about talking. Of course, making plans will require a lot of it, but effecting them and making changes in the tech landscape requires a lot of work.
Women In Tech groups are about improving gender diversity in the information technology workforce, promoting growth of our members and motivating the future generations of tech employees.
Since May, 2016 the Women In Tech group of Intertec has been meeting once monthly. This diverse group of people (male and female), is extremely focused on the development of our members, as all such groups should be. We have coffee breaks, guest speakers and in house speakers – activities aimed at strengthening the core of our group.
You can help to improve the ratios in our tech workforce, regardless of your gender or whether your company facilitates the creation of your own W.I.T. group.
Do these things:
- At each opportunity try to promote gender diversity in the workplace by ensuring roles have real requirements that are not prejudiced against any gender.
- Support your local W.I.T. group if you have one. You can make donations in time or money, in presence or online.
- Mentor a female if you find a deficiency of suitable mentors in your company or area.
Remember, a diverse workforce is a competitive advantage, build yours!
