Leadership Essay
"We often celebrate our mentors, but "anti-mentors"—those whose leadership styles we consciously choose never to replicate—shape our leadership values just as profoundly."

Every few months on LinkedIn, a wave of heartfelt gratitude sweeps through tech: professionals publicly thanking their mentors, managers, and sponsors who gave them their first break. That gratitude is necessary and well-deserved. But we frequently overlook an equally influential group that molded our professional identities: the Anti-Mentors.

An Anti-Mentor is not simply someone you had a disagreement with. They are leaders, executives, or senior peers whose behavior, decision-making, and treatment of others provided an unmistakable blueprint of what NOT to do.

Throughout our careers, we observe managers who weaponize information, who micromanage out of insecurity, who take credit for their team’s breakthroughs while deflecting failures onto junior contributors, or who confuse emotional volatility with high standards.

Observing an Anti-Mentor up close provides invaluable leadership clarity:

• It demystifies authority: You realize that organizational seniority does not automatically equal emotional intelligence or technical competence.

• It crystallizes your core values: Experiencing micromanagement firsthand makes you fiercely committed to psychological safety and outcome-driven autonomy when you step into management.

• It builds resilience and radar: You develop a keen sixth sense for toxic workplace dynamics early in interview processes, shielding yourself and your protégés.

The next time you reflect on how you lead teams, build consensus, or mentor others, give quiet credit to the anti-mentors you survived. They taught you how to become the leader you needed when you first started.
